American mom

NESE(New England School of Englsih)

Dear Former NESE Students, NESE Representatives, Homestays, and Dormitory Managers:
As we all return to our former routines here in Boston, we are actually comforted by what used to annoy us: the unusually cold and lingering weather, the delayed transit system, the excess of traffic - and too much English homework. These small problems that used to irritate us are now the welcome signs of our lives returning to normal.
At NESE, all of our current NESE students are staff are doing well - and I do mean all. The one student is who was wounded by the blasts is in fact well enough to return to NESE, and we are all delighted by this news.
Students are taking advantage of the extended classes we are holding in order to compensate for last Friday's cancellation. We are also offering free after-school sessions for those students who wish to have even further time in class with teachers.
We have also hired a security guard to stay at NESE every day this week from 8:30-5:30, not out of fear of violence, but to deter the press; they have been relentlessly annoying and invasive. All NESE students have a right to speak to the press if they wish - in their homes or on the street - but here at NESE, it is my job to protect our students as much as I possibly can, and having a security guard here certainly helps. However, I am pleased to say that the press have not visited us this week, and I truly doubt that they will. But, as we say, "It is better to be safe than sorry".
Students have also been advised that after the events of last week, it is very common for people to feel stressed, sad, and nervous for a period of time. We have reminded them that some people who experience these feelings decide to deal with them on their own. However, some prefer to talk to a professional counselor, and that there is not one right approach - except the approach that each student, himself, determines is best for him. We have reminded them that they should always feel free to talk to NESE teachers and staff. However additionally, we have let them know that if they would like to talk to a professional counselor, we can provide recommendations. Of course, we reminded them that any such request will be be held in the strictest confidence.
If there is anything good that has come out of the tragedy of last week it might be that it has helped us all remember what we have to be grateful for and in turn, allowed us to respond with gratitude to each other.
Most of us recognize much of the time that we have a great deal to be grateful for. However, it is very easy to get caught up in working towards a better career, a new goal, or solving the myriad of "problems" we all face every day. This tragic event has reminded us to take a step back and recognize what we have to be grateful for.
In truth however, recognition is not enough. There is a wonderful children's' book, "A Circle of Friends" by Giora Carmi, which in a simple, yet lovely way, demonstrates the benefits of behaving with kindness, warmth, and love. The truth is that our lives become more rewarding, more interesting actually, if we can always act with kindness, sympathy and with tolerance for others, and if we can always remember, "There but for the grace of God, go I".
At NESE's certificate ceremony this Friday, I will present every student, teacher, and staff with a copy of this book in recognition of and with gratitude for the kindness, sympathy, and tolerance they have all shown throughout this very difficult time.
I trust that my next communication with you will be more mundane - and I look forward to it.

Yours sincerely,
Anna Shine

Dearest Nicole,

Of course I remember you.  You all were an awesome group to have at my house in 2008.  You girls were so funny and cute.  I know you all had a great time here.
Yes, we are fine here in Watertown.  Thank you for asking.  Soldiers came to our house at 5:30 in the morning and checked our whole house to make sure that the bad guys were not hiding in our house.  They did the same to every house within a 20 block perimeter.  They were very nice and friendly and did not want to scare us but wanted to keep us safe.  My sister stayed home with our students.  We were in lockdown and could not leave our homes.  No school at NESE that day!!
I knew I needed to get to my work place in Watertown to take care of the old people.  The police said I could not go.  I went anyway and got stopped by the police.  I told them that I had to go to take care of the old people.  They were not going to let me go but by the grace of God they told me to go to the next checkpoint and tell them my story.  So I did that and had to go to 4 checkpoints but I finally drove into the street that my work is on and they let me go.  Everyone else at work tried to get to work but no one could get there except me.  Thank God I was able to take care of my darlings.   I had 50 elderly people to take care of with only one aide and one kitchen server.  The tree of cooked three meals during the day and we served them.  We gave everyone their medications, and entertained them all day so they would not be fearful.  We had a wonderful day even though the events of the day were so horrible.  The police lifted the lockdown at about 7;00pm.  I had been at work since 5:30 in the morning.  It was a long day.  Thank God it is over and the terrorists have been aprehended.  One dead, one in custody.
Hope you are doing well.  I am glad to hear now that you are a teacher in Senior high school.  Tell your students that you American "Mom" says hello.

Love,
Arleen

Money-saving travellers

Information helps us save a lot of money!

Eating
推荐Chicken wings&Onion with beef。

Transportation

Museums
*Boston:
Museum of Fine Arts
Isabella Steward Museum
Children's Museum
American Museum of Natural History 也可買donation ticket。

Shopping
POLO shirt,

Good bye, New York

Someone says, New York is the capital of the world.
I saw its beautiful side and ugly side at the same time.

Friday, Aug 22nd.
We carried our big size suitcase to New York, and many people helped us in the subway.
Maybe because I kept saying "shit! shit! shit!"
We're lucky girls. We got unexpexted 20 dollars and picked metro card in my room.
Then we went to MoMA, the museum of modern art.
It's free on Friday,4:00-8:00p.m.
I really couldn't figure out this kind of art.

Saturday, Agu 23rd.
We woke up early cuz today was a shooping day.
We would take the bus to Woodbury, the biggest oulet in New York.
WOW~ It's kind of a village, full of famous brands.
Coach,Polo Lauren Ralph,Tommy, Louis Vuitton, Burberry...etc.
When we ran into Coach, I quikly focused one several targets and took it.
A Taiwanese saleslady told me, I could have 40% off on this hand bag!
And This is the LAST ONE! OH MY!
My mom will cry for it.
And Amelia spent most of her money in the elegant bag. Cool!
We bought some gifts for our family and dear friends and felt very satisfied!

Sunday, Agu 24th
We "walked" to New York Public Library, but it's closed.
Then we "walked" to Grand Central Station, and the ceiling is amazing as people said.
Later we still "walked" to United Nations, and we felt so disappointed.
Nothing at all.
We're back to Broadway to wait for the cancelation ticket and lottery tickets.
We stopped by Madison Avenue, because there was a flea market in the whole street!
We're really lucky, 'cause it took place only once a year!
I bought some cute things for me and for souvenir.

Then we hurry up to broadway, and we rally got the tickets!
"Wicked" is a sweet show, good for girls like us.
I really love the role, Galinda.
And the ironic ending surprized us. It's a good experience.

Monday, Agu. 25th
Ready to go home.
Actually, New York City is not as good as I imagined.
But it'really worth to go.
Traveling brings me new inspiration and I will keep traveling.
Good bye, USA!
Thanks my good partner, Amelia. Jesus! XD

Suburbs of Boston,Salem&Concord

I just read this two places in my American Literature class.
And I'm so happy I have been there!

Agu. 2nd, Sat.
We took went to Salem by subway and transfer to bus.
It took almost an hour, Gosh!
Salem is really a small town, but it is not spooky now.
It seems that they only have celebration on Halloween.
We walked to Witch Museum and paid 8 dollar for ticket.
But,,,,,,the museum is not worth a visit.
Then we went to harbor, and there is a "friend-ship." (pun?)
The scenery near harbor was so terrific.
We bought chocolate in the oldest candy store in USA,
Ye Old Petter Company for our homemom and homedad.
It's tiring, but we had a good time to experience this old small town.

Agu. 18th, Sun.
Fortunately, it was sunny day.
After class, we took commuter rail to Concord.
The system of train is different from Taiwan, and they checked our tickets after boarding.
It's also a small town, but the atmosphere in Concord was quite tranquil.
We went to "Old North Bridge," where independence war took place.
Oh my God, it's so beautiful and peaceful there.
Like we couldn't raise our voice in case disturb the serenity there.
We took pictures there, and magical things happened...
An American woman asked us,"Do you want to go to Walden Pond? It's my favorite place."
She was so energetic and passionate,so do her daughters and son.
They gave us a lift there, and totally 11 people in her van.
We're really lucky to see Thoreau's house and Walden Pond.
Many people swam in the pond, and it's so amazing.
I can't breath 'cause we're really lucky to have such good experience.
Because we had to catch our train, and the nice woman drove us to train station.
We're sooooo grateful for that.
I will never forget what she said, "I don't spend money on expensive clothes or something.
But I believe in education, and traveling is the best way to receive education."
I agree 100%.

Museums&Central Park in New York

Aug 16th, Sat
We got up at 5:00 a.m., 'cause we would go to New York City "again."
And this weekend, we had more fun because we finally realized that we didn't have tight schedule.
Instead, we enjoyed our tour which we took pictures and went picnicking in Central Park.
On Fifth Ave., we saw many famous boutique, like Tiffany&Co.,Louis Vuitton...etc.
However, we just went window-shopping,sad.
And we entered Saint Patrick Church.
We were so lucky to see a wedding taking place there.
Finally, we walked through Central Park and arrived Metropolitan Museum.
We bought "donation ticket," that is how much you want to pay, it's up to you.
So, we just spend 1 dollar. XD
It's really huge, and you never finish this museum in a day.
The renaissance furniture is so elaborate, and there are so many well-known paintings.
I found my favorite painting in my childhood, and I was so surprised.

Then, we went to American Museum of Natural History and bought donation ticket.
It's really a way to save money,'cause we just spent 1 dollar again.
The movie,"Night at the Museum" was shot there.
It's also a large one, and amazing.
I just felt I had a biological class and astronomical class.

Metropolitan Museum

                                                                       Musical - The Wicked
                                                                       MOMA
                                                          Museum of  Natural  History

Aug 17th, Sun.
We took a good rest the last night and felt so energetic for today's schedule.
In the morning, we went to Central Park from 96th St and walked down to 81th St.
The view is so beautiful, and everything is so green and green and green.
Many people go jogging here, like Charlotte in "Sex and the City."

We still couldn't finish all the parts in the museum until our time back.
We walked into Central Park again and stopped by the famous sites.
NY is a big apple, and everyone come here for a bite.
Anyway,I still felt too crowded here.

New York Walker

We're definitely great walkers in NY, 'cause we went Midtown,Downtown and Lower Manhattan mostly on foot.
On Aug. 8th, Friday(Happy Father's day), we arrived Penn Station.
We went to Time Square, and there is no any square, actually!
The neon lights boards were everywhere and people was everywhere.
I had a feeling that I was in the street in Taipei.

Cute, I finally tasted "coldstone," and I love it.
They mixed oreo, caramel, nuts, everything you want together.

And we back to Chelsea Hostel, it was the cheapest accommodation we could find in NY.
Actually,it's like a dormitory, and people who you don't know live together.
It's kind of an special experience.

And the next day,Aug 9th, Saturday, we took a boat to Statue of Liberty.
The view is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And then we went to Immigration Museum in Ellis Island.
We saw how "Old America" become "New American."
It's an amazing history, and I really felt stunned.
Then we back to Battery Park and walked to Wall Street.
Everything was under construction there, so sad.

                                                                      Time Square

On Sunday, it was a long trip that we were proud of ourselves.
We walked through Greenwich Village,SOHO,and Little Italy by foot(Jesus, exhausted!).
I was kind of disappointed about these areas,'cause they were not as good as the guidebook said.
Luckily, we ate the cupcake which is Miranda's favorite in "Sex and the City."
I'm really crazy for this series, but I feel it over-beautified New York City.

We were not satified maybe 'cause we have not been to the fantastic parts in NY, like
museums, Central Park, Broadway show.
I will go to NY the following weekends to visit these places. Hope it will be my way back to love New York.

Beautiful days in Boston

Like Inma says, we have beautiful days here.
Every day, we go to class to know new friends from other countries.
By talking with them, there are something inspired in my mind.
I know people live thier life in different way.
Like a girl from Brazil come here with her husband for two years, and she's just
24 years old. And a 14-year-old Chinese girl is going to high school here.
There are many 30s-year-old people take a break from their job and back to be a student, like Inma.
Many people travel a lot, 'cause this makes their life experiences richer.
I really enjoy talking with people from other countries and know diffrent background.
This makes me feel so excited.
By the way, a Mexican guy call me several times, and he asked me out for "Coldplay" concert.
What a famous band, but I refused him 'cause I love u, little pig.
Inma invited me to Spain, and I must visit her in the future.
I really want to learn Spanish, and it is more fun to learn a language by eperience thier
culture at the same time.

Dear Arleen is a professional cook, and she prepared various authentic food for dinner.
Like today, she cooked fried eggplants, and it is so delicious!!!!!
There are also many snacks at home, so I eat a lot here.
Now, I just worry about that I will become fatter and fatter.

It is a wise a decision not to have class in the afternoon, so we can go out every afternoon.
We've been to many places until now, like Freedom trail, Copley, Downtown, museums...etc.
And Quincy Market is a good place where we often visit, because we can get some yummy free treats.
Also, US is a paradise for shopping. We don't have to pay tax for clothes and shoes here!

I am going to New York tomorrow for this weekend.
So excitied!
                                                                  Boston Park 旁
                                                   Boston Art Museum
                                                               Boston Art Museum
                                                        Boston Children's Museum

                                                                 Freedom Trail
                                                                             MIT

I'm going to leaving Boston to NY tomorrow.
Today, I bought daisy for Arleen, and I really appreciate their kindness.
I'm so grateful to live in such a nice homestay for a month.
In spite of gaining pounds here, I still enjoyed Arleen's dinner very much!

Honestly, Boston is my favorite city now.
It's like between city and country.
Although the environment is not as beautiful as Vancouver, but it much more convenient.
Many universities are located here which makes Boston more energetic.

At NESE, I always learned a lot in my TOEFL class.
Willy is a teacher who I will respect him forever.
And,Oh my God!The Italian guys in this class are so handsome.
I'm so happy I was Stefino's partner once.
He's so cute!!!!! I must learn Italian in the coming future.

Thanks my good partner, Amelia.:)
We are so proud of ourselves,'cause we do a lot of homework of our trip.
We tried to find a way which spend less money but have more fun.
Thanks my friends for the guidebook, and it really helped us a lot!!!!!
We've almost been to every site in the guidebook.
Arranging tours by ourselves really brought me a huge sense of acheivement.
I know I will stick to this way for my traveling.

G' night, Boston.
My Love.
